Camera and GPS notes

My camera is a Panasonic FX-500 "Lumix" digital camera. Flash cards: You can use SD cards up to 2GB. To use 4-to-16GB cards, the cards have to be SDHC.

Fairfax Connector on weekends:

  • 101 between Huntington Metro and Mount Vernon, roughly every hour. One way takes 25-30 minutes.
  • 151 Richmond Highway Circulator from Huntington Metro, stops at Mount Vernon, roughly every hour. One cycle takes about 75 minutes. 152 same route but in opposite direction.
  • 505 between West Falls Church and Reston Town Center Transit Station, roughly every half hour. One way takes about 25 minutes.
  • 574 between Tysons Corner Center @ Nordstroms and Reston Town Center, roughly every hour. One way takes about 47-49 minutes.
  • 950 between West Falls Church and Reston Town Center Transit Station, roughly every half hour. One way takes 45-50 minutes.
  • RIBS1&3 circular route from Reston Town Center Transit Station, stops at Lake Anne Fellowship House, Cedar Ridge Apts., Tall Oaks Village Center, Reston East @ Wiehle Ave., and Hunters Woods Village Center. One circle takes 48-50 minutes.
  • RIBS2 (South Lakes/Herndon-Monroe Line)

Glebe Road east to Rosslyn Start from Arlington (Glebe Road) and walk east.
Glebe Road west to East Falls Church Start from Arlington (Glebe Road) and walk west.
East Falls Church west to Merrifield
Merrifield west to Fairfax Circle
Fairfax Circle west to Jermantown Road
Jermantown Road west to Centreville Once you get to Centreville, there are apparently a lot of stops for Route 12 Metrobuses, which should take you back to the Vienna Metro Station. (The westmost point for the Centreville South line [weekdays only!] is a Park-and-Ride at Lee Highway and Stone Road.)
Arlington Highway (Route 50), VA
Iwo Jima Memorial west to Glebe Road Takes you south past Fort Myer. Where Arlington Boulevard meets Glebe Road, the north side of the intersection is North Glebe Road, and the south side is South Glebe Road.
Glebe Road west to Seven Corners
Seven Corners west to Gallows Road in Merrifield Following Gallows Road north will take you, eventually, to the Dunn Loring Metro Station.
Gallows Road west to Fairfax Circle
Leesburg Pike (Route 7), VA
Seven Corners west to West Falls Church
West Falls Church west to Tysons Corner
Seven Corners east to King Street in Alexandria
Falls Church, VA
Broad Street/Leesburg Pike (Route 7) (1) Start at Seven Corners and proceed (a) southeast towards Bailey's Crossroads and Alexandria (where it becomes King Street), or (b) northwest through Falls Church and towards Tysons Corner.
Wilson Boulevard Start at Ballston and either (a) walk west toward Seven Corners, or (b) walk east toward Rosslyn.
Arlington Boulevard (1) Follow Glebe Road southeast until you reach Arlington Blvd., then turn either (a) east toward Fort Myer and Rosslyn, or (b) west toward Seven Corners. (2) Start at Seven Corners and proceed west toward Merrifield and Fairfax.
Washington & Old Dominion Trail, VA (map)
Shirlington west to East Falls Church Take the 23A south/east all the way to Shirlington Road and Four Mile Run Drive; the W&OD Trail starts right around there. Walk the trail west; the East Falls Church Metro is very close to the five-mile marker.

Georgetown, DC
Georgetown DC Any given weekend: Take the 38B to get there; take the Circulator to get around.

Attractions: K and M Street and the waterfront.

Along the Potomac Any given weekend: Start at the Georgetown end of the Key Bridge and walk east along the shore of the Potomac.

Attractions: Rock Creek, Watergate Hotel, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, West Potomac Park.

Capital Crescent Trail Any given weekend: Take the 38B to Georgetown; walk west along the waterfront. After about four miles, the trail turns north.
Theodore Roosevelt Island (map) Any given weekend: From Rosslyn: Go to the south end of the Key Bridge and find the trail to Alexandria. Walk the trail a quarter mile; the bridge to the island will be on the left.

Rock Creek Park North Any given weekend: Take Metro to Woodley Park-Zoo station; find the trail and walk north.

Alternative: Take Metro to Silver Spring; walk southwest on Colesville Road/North Portal Drive; turn south on (East? West?) Beach Drive and follow it into the park. Pick one of two paths:

  • Valley Trail. You'll reach this first; go southeast.
  • Western Ridge Trail. When you reach Valley Trail, go west about a half mile, until you reach Boundary Bridge on the DC/Maryland border; Western Ridge Trail begins around that point.

Walk about six miles or so, to the Zoo. Pass through the Zoo and follow Connecticut Avenue to a Metro station to get home.

Rock Creek Park South Any given weekend: Take the 38B to Georgetown; walk along the Potomac waterfront; turn north and follow Rock Creek Parkway.
Silver Spring to the White House (via 16th Street) Any given weekend: Take Metro to Silver Spring; walk southwest on Colesville Road until you hit 16th Street NW. This is a straight line four and a half miles south to Lafayette Park and the White House. (Actually, once you reach I Street, you can turn west and should be able to find the Farragut West Metro within a couple of blocks.)
Washington Monument West Any given weekend.

Attractions: Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial

Washington Monument East (Constitution and Madison Avenues NW) Any given weekend.

Attractions: The Mall, including multiple museums: N.M. of American History, N.M. of Natural History, N. Gallery of Art

Washington Monument East (Independence Avenue and Jefferson Drive SW) Any given weekend.

Attractions: The Mall, including multiple museums: Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, N. Air and Space M., N.M. of the American Indian

National Zoo Any given weekend: Take the Red Line (in the direction of Shady Grove) to Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station (Red Line).

Attractions: Indoor exhibits; cheetahs; lions and tigers; bald eagles; flamingos; (eventually) elephants

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Any given weekend: Take the Red Line (in the direction of Glenmont) to Brookland-CUA
President's Park (incl. the White House) Any given weekend: Take the Orange Line (in the direction of New Carrollton) to Farragut West. Walk east to 17th Street, then south to H Street, then one block east to get to the park.

Alexandria VA

Attractions: Old Town and the waterfront.

George Washington Masonic Memorial Any given weekend: Take the Yellow Line to King Street. Open daily 10 to 4; tours at 10, 11:30, 1:30, and 3.
Mount Vernon Any given weekend: Take the Yellow Line to Huntington; transfer to Fairfax Connector 101 (between 50 and 59 minutes after the hour) to Mount Vernon.

Walk back to Alexandria via the Mount Vernon Trail.

Other places in Virginia
Herndon Any given weekend: Take the FC950 from West Falls Church to the "Park & Ride" in Herndon. Buses run every half hour on the weekends. W&OD Trail passes near the intersection of Elden St and Monroe St. If you're really ambitious, you might consider a walk to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center to see all the planes that won't fit in the Smithsonian.
Occoquan VA (map) Weekdays only: From the Franconia-Springfield Metro, take the OmniRide (Prince William Metro Direct, 6:00 or 6:35 or 7:15 or 7:45 or 8:30 or 9:00) and get off at Gordon Boulevard (less than half a mile after the bus crosses over the river -- once you pass Annapolis Way on the right, pull the cord). Then walk northwest up Gordon Boulevard to Occoquan (about one and a half miles). Returning: Catch the bus from Route 1 and Gordon at 1:18 or 2:28 or 3:03 or 3:38 or 4:18 or 4:53 or 5:29.
Leesburg and Purcellville VA Weekdays only: R5A bus from West Falls Church to Leesburg ($2.00 fare), get off at 110 Catoctin Circle SE. Bus to Purcellville ($0.50 fare) leaves from Loudoun County Government Center on Harrison Street (every hour from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm).
Fredericksburg VA Weekdays only: VRE system map and schedule. Going to Fredericksburg for a day requires getting up extra early so you can be at Union Station before 7:30am (or Alexandria before 7:47am). Local bus routes.
Manassas VA Weekdays only: Take the Manassas Metro Direct from West Falls Church.
