Fredericksburg2007

Staying in Fredericksburg VA for four days and three nights (21-24 December 2007)!

Prep

• Pack change of clothes, towel, camera+batteries+charger, binder (maps, pix, Kiki notes, lang notes).
• Bring index cards and a magic marker. (Write down your location when taking pictures, and include the index card in the picture. Think of them as like the title cards in silent movies.)

Travel

Traveling by Amtrak (reservation 0B9727):

• Leaving DC (Union Station) 7:30 am Friday.
  • Leave the house at 6 am! Get to Ballston by 6:30 am. At Metro Center, transfer to Red Line to Glenmont. Be at Union Station a half hour before the train leaves; pick up tickets at an Amtrak Quik-Trak self-service ticketing kiosk there.
• Leaving Fredericksburg (Caroline St. & Lafayette Blvd.) 6:56 pm Monday.

Hotel

Best Western, 2205 Plank Road. Reservation Confirmation Number: 245143704. Walk or ride to FRED Central; transfer to the F1 bus. Check-in Friday 3pm; check-out Monday 12 noon. King bed, fridge, microwave, continental breakfast.

While in Fredericksburg

NOTE: Buses run Monday through Friday only! You'll be walking (downtown) on Saturday and Sunday!

Friday and Monday ("bus days")

• Best thing is to get on buses and be on the lookout for interesting things to photograph.

Stafford County

• The D1 leaves the train station every hour from 8 am to 6 pm. The complete route takes an hour. (You're scheduled to arrive in Fredericksburg about 8:35 am Friday.)
• The D2 and D5 also leave from "FRED Central" and take you north into Stafford County.
  • The D2 leaves FRED Central every hour from 8 am to 6 pm. The complete route takes an hour.
  • The D5 leaves FRED Central every hour from 9 am to 4 pm. The complete route takes an hour.

Potomac

• The K2 leaves from "#1 FRED Central" (1400 Jefferson Davis Hwy, near the University of Mary Washington) and takes you to the Potomac.
  • The K2 leaves FRED Central at 7 am, 9 am, 10 am, 12 noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm. The 9 am route takes an hour (skipping some stops); other routes take two hours.

Other places?

• Buses leaving from the station at Caroline & Lafayette: F2, F4, D1, VF1, VS1.
  • The F2 leaves FRED Central every hour from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. Routes at 9:30, 11:30, 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, and 7:30 go through downtown; other routes go to Lee's Hill Center at Spotsylvania Avenue.
• Buses leaving from near the station (from downtown Fredericksburg): F3.

Saturday and Sunday ("walk days")

• Walking around downtown Fredericksburg, and in the parks north of the station.
• I'll want to walk along the waterfront along the Rappahannock River (just east of downtown Fredericksburg).
