Abbreviations
- [] enclose etymological notes

- A = Azarennya
- a = article
- b/o = being(s) and/or object(s)
- Cf = compare; see also
- cm = clause marker

- n = noun (word used most often as a noun)
- nar = narrowing of meaning
- pr = pronoun
- S = Spanish
- unk = unknown
- v = verb (word used most often as a verb)
- wid = widening of meaning

From a site on learning Spanish:
You need 1000-1500 words to speak well but 1500-2000 words to understand others in conversation. [To understand written works, you need at least 15,000-20,000 words.] People speak 75% of the time about five general topics: family, business, personal care, travel/transportation, and food/dining — learn 300-400 words on each of these five.
Family
mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, family, house, things around the house, pets, rules and mores, hosts and guests, relatives, in-laws, marriage, divorce, rites of passage, etc.
- fava n father [< E]
- mava n mother [< E (v < dh)]
- sesa n sister [< E (mid s < st)]
- daga n dog [< E]
- kida n particular class of breeds of cats bred to be larger than a regular housecat [< E cat (nar)]
- vaza n horse [< S caballo ("ka-BA-yo")]
School and learning
school, teacher, homework, tests, arithmetic, history, arts, science, martial arts, reading, writing, essays, grades, etc.
I feel...
happy, sad, hungry, thirsty, tired, ambitious, unconquerable, sick, well, sluggish, energetic, feisty, perky, hopeful, disappointed, annoyed, angry, loved, warm, cold, violated, humiliated, vindicated, etc.
Personal care: I am wearing...
shirt, pants, dress, shoes, etc.
- bonja n object placed on clothing (badge, patch, medal, sash, etc.) [<< E band]
Food/dining: I am eating/drinking...
water, milk, cereal, bread, beer, wine, meat, fish, (different kinds of food and drink)
Travel/transportation: I am driving/riding in...
car, bus, plane, boat, etc.
Business:
market, buying, selling, bargain (good deal), haggle, offer, money

Functional words (articles, pronouns, clause markers)
(new for 2006-11-21)
Noun articles:
- o — default noun article
- se — self, itself (stands in for an object after an intransitive verb)
- go — marks noun explicitly as singular
- le — marks noun explicitly as non-singular (as multiple, as a fraction, as an uncountable mass, etc.)
Noun articles — preposition equivalents:
- aze — original starting point
- dain — end point, destination, goal
- loi — current location or stopping point (implies that the point is not the endpoint, that the subject has neither reached nor abandoned his goal, but will start moving again)
- prema — area or space around something, immediate vicinity of something [<< E perimeter]
Verb articles — time markers:
|
| Before moment
| In the moment
| After the moment
| | Present time
| do
| zhan
| seu
| | Narrative time
| van
| ve
| vol
|
Append -da to a time marker to mark the verb as a participle (and the enclosing clause as descriptive instead of narrative).
Other verb articles:
- ape — habitually, customarily [<< E occupation]
- den — failing to do at all
- fina — affinity for; tending to (do something)
- leu — failing to (e.g., fail to shoot = shoot and miss)
- mwa — more, -er: converts adjective to verb meaning "to be more ___ than"
(need articles to mark past/future, present vs. narrative time, moods, etc.)
Clause markers:
- besi — please: introduces polite imperative
- e (or en before a vowel) — generic clause marker
- ta — do it!: introduces strong imperative
Pronouns are references to noun phrases in other clauses, usually the previous clause.
- sa — refers to topic of previous clause
- je — refers to most recent non-topic noun
(added 2006-11-14 -- mostly obsolete)
These introduce a being or object into a discourse:
- ala a a, an (introduces a singular noun) [unk, ?<< F olli ("one"???)]
- aya a some (introduces a plural noun) [unk]
These either mark or stand in for the object in a clause:
- di a (precedes object in narrative (main) clause)
- ne a (precedes object in descriptive (subordinate) clause)
- se a (used as "object" of intransitive verb in narrative (main) clause)
- ye a (used as "object" of intransitive verb in descriptive (subordinate) clause)
These are pronouns:
- e pr (refers to topic) [?< E he]
- zhe pr (refers to non-topic) [?<< E them, those]
These "inflect" nouns, verbs, or modifiers:
- eo a ''Precedes comparative modifier. Turns modifier into a verb, which thus may take an object. Examples:
- "eo fisa di Alin" means "faster than Alin" (in a narrative clause).
- "eo fisa ne Alin" means "faster than Alin" (in a descriptive clause).
- "eo fisa se" means "faster" or "fastest" (in a narrative clause).

- ma a Precedes superlative modifier. "ma fisa" means "fastest".
- wa a (precedes noun or verb) must; required.
- ya a (precedes plural (non-singular) noun)
Clause markers
- besi cm please (marks polite imperative, precedes either verb or complete clause) [?< G bitte]
