2006-11-15: How to import English words into Azarennya

Consonants and clusters

Starting sound Change sound to: Notes
s after u or oo sh See Ruki sound law.
Initial sk, skl, skr s'k, s'kl, s'kr
Initial sp, spl, spr s'p, s'pl, s'pr
Initial st, str ch, ch'r st > ts > tsh (ch)
ti si
Initial or intervocalic w g w > gw > g
Final consonant (other than l, n, r, s) Append previous single vowel. If previous vowel is a diphthong, repeat last vowel in diphthong. So if the word is "reik", make it "reiki". Justification: Vowel harmony.
Internal diphthong Simplify if word is indispensable. If word is likely to be very frequently used, consider removing second vowel from diphthong.

Finally

After changing the sound of the word, consider any semantic changes the word might have undergone. For example, the word that was once "give" has come to mean "relinquish ownership of or control of or responsibility for (something)."

Notes:

  • The apostrophe (between consonants) represents a schwa — an indistinct vowel sound that cannot have stress, and that is inserted in order to break up consonant clusters.

Vowel lengths

Certain words would lose final consonants and leave a lengthened vowel?

Pidgin sounds

  • Japanese: a e i o u; b ch d g h k m n p r s t ts w y z
  • Spanish: a e i o u; b ch d f g k l ly m n ny p r s t th w x y
  • Finnish: a e i o u y ä ö; h k l m n p r s t v y; (b d f g sh)
  • Resulting pidgin: a e i o u; b ch d g h k m n p r s t w y ("ch" can be "sh" and "r" can be "l"). Clusters and diphthongs kept to a minimum if used at all.
